POPE FRANCIS DIES AT 88

On Easter Monday, Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a deeply influential figure in modern Catholicism, passed away at the age of 88. His death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the history of the Catholic Church.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he became the 266th pope in 2013, and the first non-European pope in over a millennium. From the very beginning, Pope Francis set a new tone for the papacy—one rooted in humility, compassion, and a deep concern for the marginalized.

Over the course of his papacy, he championed social justice, environmental responsibility, and a more inclusive Church. He was outspoken on issues such as climate change, economic inequality, the refugee crisis, and the need for mercy over judgment. His efforts to shift the focus of the Church from dogma to dialogue earned him both admiration and criticism, but few could deny his profound impact.

Passing away on Easter Monday—symbolically a day of hope and resurrection—adds a poignant layer to his departure. For millions of Catholics around the world, this moment will be one of mourning, reflection, and gratitude for a spiritual leader who tried to bring the Church closer to the people and the times.

Pope Francis was not without controversy, especially within the traditional wings of the Church, but his legacy will be remembered as one of courage, openness, and a genuine attempt to reconcile ancient faith with modern humanity.

Today, the world bids farewell to a pope of the people—a shepherd who walked with his flock.
